Dr. Jorien Vonk
Jorien Vonk studies permafrost, which contains as much carbon as is present in all the living biomass on Earth combined. These deposits have been frozen for thousands of years. However, Arctic permafrost areas are thawing steadily, releasing organic carbon via rivers and coastal erosion which may contribute to global warming.
Vonk has recently (2020) been awarded a Vidi grant of 800,000 euros for research in the Arctic, which will allow her to further develop her own line of research and expand her research group over the next five years. At Insight Out, Vonk will give a talk with her former postdoc, Dr. Lisa Bröder, about shared experiences in their careers in Science and the importance of mentoring. Bröder now works as a researcher at the ETH Zürich.
