Professor Amina Helmi
Amina Helmi is Professor of Dynamics, Structure and Formation of the Milky Way at the Kapteyn Institute of the University of Groningen. She is one of the founders of galactic archeology and leads one of the most productive research groups in the world in the area of stellar dynamics and Milky Way studies. As an astronomical archeologist, she looks for remnants of ancient galaxies to shed new light on the history and formation of the Milky Way. Prof. Helmi has received several prestigious prizes and she has been awarded a number of prestigious grants, including NWO Vidi and VICI grants, and an ERC Starting Grant from the EU. She is the Dutch science representative on the Council of the European Southern Observatory and member of the advisory committee of the European Space Agency. Additionally, she is a member of both the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Recently, in 2019, Professor Helmi has been awarded the NWO Spinoza Prize, the highest academic award in The Netherlands.
